Fronteer has accepted this piece for their textile exhibition. Hope you get to see it. Fronteer Gallery at 18, Exchange Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 5TS is open 10am-3pm Wednesdays to Fridays, and 2pm-7pm Saturdays.

It is called Artspace: Spirited and expresses my experience of moving into my first studio. Our studio complexes resemble a hive with cells. I researched the life cycle of wasps and dissected a nest. The variety of colours on the outside was surprising. I ordered wool roving that matched the colours of the nest . I then experimented developing a new technique using PVA glue creating sheets of roving with a felted effect. These sheets could then be cut and manipulated to create structures held by recycled copper wire that I made into springs.

Working on this piece reminded me of Maslow’s Hierarchy of need (self-actualisation needs) and Geoff Petty’s perspiration stage of the creative process.

The box is handmade from MDF, plywood and glass by Becca Hopkinson (BebaBespoke.co.uk), painted white inside and out and represents my cell. It can be wall hung or sit on a shelf or plinth.
